چکیده

yndromic surveillance, a medical surveillance approach that bins data into broadly defi ned syndrome groups, has drawn increasing interest in recent years for the early detection of disease outbreaks for both public health and bioterrorism defense. Emergency department chief complaint records are an attractive data source for syndromic surveillance owing to their timeliness and ready availability in electronic form. As part of the ESSENCE prototype biosurveillance system, APL has developed an automated process for classifying chief complaint data into syndrome groups, thus increasing the feasibility of chief complaint–based surveillance by avoiding laborious manual classifi cation. Preliminary studies indicate positive results in classifying daily chief complaint data feeds from multiple hospital sources.

Validation of the Michigan’s Public Health Syndromic System Using Electronic Medical Records

Introduction Michigan has been collecting chief complaint data from emergency departments statewide to support situational awareness activities related to communicable disease since 2004. We validated the syndromic system by comparing the chief complaint data to the electronic medical records (1,2,3) of a tertiary hospital in southeast Michigan to better understand the utility of the system for...

Emergency Department Chief Complaint and Diagnosis Data to Detect Influenza-Like Illness with an Electronic Medical Record

BACKGROUND The purpose of syndromic surveillance is early detection of a disease outbreak. Such systems rely on the earliest data, usually chief complaint. The growing use of electronic medical records (EMR) raises the possibility that other data, such as emergency department (ED) diagnosis, may provide more specific information without significant delay, and might be more effective in detectin...

Optimizing A Syndromic Surveillance Text Classifier for Influenza-like Illness: Does Document Source Matter?

Syndromic surveillance systems that incorporate electronic free-text data have primarily focused on extracting concepts of interest from chief complaint text, emergency department visit notes, and nurse triage notes. Due to availability and access, there has been limited work in the area of surveilling the full text of all electronic note documents compared with more specific document sources. ...

The National Capitol Region’s Emergency Department Syndromic Surveillance System:
Do Chief Complaint and Discharge Diagnosis Yield Different Results?

We compared syndromic categorization of chief complaint and discharge diagnosis for 3,919 emergency department visits to two hospitals in the U.S. National Capitol Region. Agreement between chief complaint and discharge diagnosis was good overall (kappa=0.639), but neurologic and sepsis syndromes had markedly lower agreement than other syndromes (kappa statistics 0.085 and 0.105, respectively).

Multilingual chief complaint classification for syndromic surveillance: An experiment with Chinese chief complaints

PURPOSE Syndromic surveillance is aimed at early detection of disease outbreaks. An important data source for syndromic surveillance is free-text chief complaints (CCs), which may be recorded in different languages. For automated syndromic surveillance, CCs must be classified into predefined syndromic categories to facilitate subsequent data aggregation and analysis. Despite the fact that syndr...
